The Map Library is located in the Department of Geography Geospatial Sciences and Earth Observation. The Library boasts of huge collections of information and knowledge products and services thatsupport teaching, research, and learning activities at the University of Zimbabwe. These library resources are in line with Education 5.0 which; encourage the production of goods and services for the upliftment of communities. The Map Library provides access to contemporary information and communication technology infrastructure that support research and a conducive environment for studying. Additionally, the Library offers many ways to support research, from consultations with information and knowledge management specialist on literature searching, course-related instruction, reference management software and expertise to research and guide to publishing.

 
 


Available Resources

 

The Map Library has a huge collection of research-level literature in both print and electronic format to support the teaching, research, and learning activities at the University of Zimbabwe. The collection covers geographic information systems, geospatial intelligence, landscape ecology; architecture, real estate management, spatial management and transport systems and mobility. The Library also provides access to different types of maps that include topographic maps, political maps, physical maps, climate maps and economic maps. In addition to the print resources, the Library provides access to a comprehensive collection of electronic resources that cater for disciplines of Geography Geospatial Sciences and Earth ObservationArchitecture and Real Estate. The electronic resources are accessed via the Campus Access or Remote Access to ensure ease of access to support research and learning. The Library provides access to an online repository of different types of maps that include topographic maps, political maps, physical maps, climate maps and economic maps.

The Library provides cutting edge services that support research and scholarship in the areas of GIS, spatial planning and real estate management. The services offered include training on:

 

Training

Description

Reference Management

The training covers the use of reference management tools which enable individual researchers or a group of researchers to manage references. Examples include Zotero and Mendeley, which incorporates a sharable reference manager as well as a social network.

Literature discovery

The training equips staff and students with skills on how to conduct literature search and how to develop effective search strategies in order to discover pertinent information

Tools for research Collaboration

The Library offers training on different platforms that researchers can utilise to enable them to cooperate and collaborate seamlessly on their research, sharing research objects as well and ideas and experiences, for example, ResearchGate, Google Drive among others.

Research Impact tracking

 

 

The training covers various tools that can be used to track the scholarly impact of researchers by enabling them to create professional and scholarly online profiles in which they share and keep track of their professional and scholarly activities, for example, Google Scholar Citations.

Publishing in reputable journals

The library provides information and trainings on the different tools that can be used to help researchers identify legitimate journals for their research.

Research Communication

The training includes tips on how researchers can effectively communicate their research so that the research can be disseminated to wider audiences in order to increase the research impact in communities.

 

 

Borrowing of Library Books

Internet and computing services

The Map Library provides access to contemporary information and communication technology infrastructure that support research. Patrons can conduct their research using desktop computers available in the Library. Additionally, users can bring their own devices to access the Internet. There are network cables and wireless connection provided in the Library.

The Map Library is open to all University of Zimbabwe students and staff.
