The library is situated on the ground floor of the University of Zimbabwe College of Health sciences on Mazowe Street, Harare. It is at the North end of the Parirenyatwa Hospital complex. The College of Health Sciences Library (CHS) is historically and by designation the country's national focal point for health information, and it is the only comprehensive source of biomedical and health information in Zimbabwe.

Book Drops

  • A post box for reserve material is located outside the College of Health Sciences library entrance. Books are only posted before 08:00am. This post box is for LIBRARY RESERVE BOOKS ONLY.

Overdue Fines

  • Overdue fine notices are sent as a courtesy. Failure to receive a notice does not absolve the borrower of the responsibility of returning overdue materials. For fines visit the Circulation Services

Fine Payment

  • Fines paid at the reference desk. Hours are Monday through Friday, 09:00 – 10:00 am and 10:30 – 12:45pm and 14:00 – 1600pm.

Users with outstanding fines will not be allowed to borrow books.

Outreach  Service

 Aimed at providing health professionals wherever they are in Zimbabwe with information. Outreach Services available are as follows:

  • Literature searches on any biomedical subject of interest

  • Verification of references, and other bibliographic services

  • Electronic mail services to institutions and individuals world-wide

  • Provision of photocopies of journal articles on request


Evidence-based Medicine

Inter-Library Loan

Publications that are not held by the Library may be requested through the Inter-Library Loans Department. The Library cooperates with other libraries in Southern Africa and overseas in the supply of photocopies of journal articles . Payment by the applicant is required if the Library supplying the material levies a charge.

Information Literacy Training

Having difficulties accessing library print and online resources? The CHS library staff will impart information literacy skills to library users to enable them to become independent lifelong learners. Users will be in a position to effectively select, search and evaluate information sources. ILS training is a continuous process and duration and levels of training vary on the extent of need of different groups.

Education is provided for undergraduates and any other users who would benefit from a tour of the library and information about its operations and services.
Instruction is given to post-graduate students to enable them to use the library and its resources most effectively for patient care and research.
Tutorials in the use of CD-ROM databases and the Internet can be arranged for small groups upon request. Please contact the Reference Librarian if interested.

The CHS Library Reference Service provides assistance in finding and using printed and electronic materials for medicine, pharmacy and biomedical sciences.

The Reference Librarian assists users in locating sources of information, selecting and using resources for reports, assignments and research, and learning to use library and information resources

Librarians at the reference desk also provide individual assistance to staff and students who want more detailed knowledge of information resources in a subject area. Please contact the Reference Librarian on ext. 2237 to set up this type of research consultation.
