purchasing library materials is given to those materials, which meet direct curricular needs in courses offered, including items needed for class assignments. After the primary needs have been met, consideration may be given to other desirable materials, which give balance to the collection or meet the teaching, learning and research needs of the university community<\/p><p><strong>General Guidelines for Selection <\/strong> Materials selected for inclusion into the UZ library&#8217;s collection should reflect the mission statement of the Library and:<\/p><ul><li>be in alignment with curriculum needs and standards.<\/li><li>meet the needs of different learning styles.<\/li><li>be accurate, current, and authoritative.<\/li><li>provide resources to support instruction.<\/li><li>be of authentic quality.<\/li><li>reflect a diverse culture free of stereotypes.<\/li><li>provide different points of view.<\/li><li>be of optimal educational value.<\/li><li>further the professional development of students and staff.<\/li><li>cover a range of formats<\/li><li>encourage life-long love of reading and learning.<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>Purchase suggestion<\/strong><\/p><p>Purchase suggestions can be made by the university community using selection guidelines outlined above. The suggestions can be made through the following link: <a href=\"http:\/\/uzlibsys.uz.ac.zw\/acquire\">http:\/\/uzlibsys.uz.ac.zw\/acquire<\/a><\/p><p><strong>Gift\/Donation Policy <\/strong> All gifts will be subject to the same selection process as purchased materials. While gifts are gratefully accepted, items deemed inappropriate will be respectfully declined or deselected:<\/p><ul><li>Donors are requested to provide lists of books to be donated before delivery<\/li><li>Faculties are requested to select relevant materials from the lists<\/li><li>All donations are formally acknowledged by the University Librarian.<\/li><\/ul><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-tab-title elementor-tab-mobile-title\" aria-selected=\"false\" data-tab=\"2\" role=\"tab\" tabindex=\"-1\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-1272\" aria-expanded=\"false\">Circulation Policy<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-1272\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"2\" role=\"tabpanel\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-1272\" tabindex=\"0\" hidden=\"hidden\"><p><strong>WHO MAY BORROW LIBRARY ITEMS?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>All students and staff must present a valid University of Zimbabwe (UZ) identification card and should be registered with the UZ Libraries in order to borrow materials from the Library. All non-University clients who are eligible to become Approved Readers may have access to Library collections but do not have borrowing privileges. <strong>BORROWER RESPONSIBILITIES<\/strong> Library patrons are responsible for all items borrowed on one\u2019s library account and for knowing the date when a borrowed item should be returned. Items checked out to an individual must be returned in good condition, without evidence of defacement, mutilation, or other damage. Late return of Library materials attacks a fine on the borrower. Patrons may be notified via email of approaching due dates. Failure to receive a notice does not absolve the borrower of the responsibility of returning overdue materials and paying a fine.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><strong>INTER LIBRARY LOAN (ILL) SERVICES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The UZ Library may provide Interlibrary Loan (ILL) services. This means that any copying of materials by University faculty, staff, or students, regardless of format, is subject to certain limits and restrictions. The use of copyrighted works at the University Library is enabled by:<\/p><ul><li>The terms of the Copyright and Neighbouring Rights Act (Chapter 26:05), which contains a fair dealing exception as well as numerous educational exceptions<\/li><li>Licensing agreements with the publishers of e-journals and e-Books<\/li><li>Permissions secured from authors, publishers, and other copyright owners as required<\/li><\/ul><p><strong>Copying &amp; Printing in the Library<\/strong> When using the Library&#8217;s copying, scanning, and printing equipment to make copies of works which are protected by copyright, the copying must be authorized by:<\/p><ul><li>The Copyright and Neighbouring Rights Act (Chapter 26:05) for the purpose of fair dealing or under other educational exceptions set out in that Act<\/li><li>The copyright owner, Or<\/li><li>In the case of e-journals and e-Books, the terms of licenses with the publishers of those works<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>Copying for Course Reserves<\/strong><\/p><ul><li>Copies of articles, book chapters and other materials placed on print or electronic Reserve must also comply with the Copyright and Neighbouring Rights Act.<\/li><li>When submitting photocopied or scanned material to be placed on Reserve, instructors are required to indicate the original source of the material, the author, the publisher, the year of publication, the exact pages copied, and in some cases, the total number of pages in the original work.<\/li><li>Reserve staff will seek permission from the copyright holder for any copies placed on Reserve that exceed the limits of fair dealing.<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>Copying for Instructional Purposes<\/strong><\/p><ul><li>Instructors may copy and communicate, in paper or electronic form, short passages of copyright-protected works (<em>See Fair Dealing in Copyright and Neighbouring Rights Act<\/em>) and may provide a copy to each student enrolled in a class or course as a class handout.<\/li><\/ul><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-tab-title elementor-tab-mobile-title\" aria-selected=\"false\" data-tab=\"4\" role=\"tab\" tabindex=\"-1\" aria-controls=\"elementor-tab-content-1274\" aria-expanded=\"false\">Electronic Resources Policy<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"elementor-tab-content-1274\" class=\"elementor-tab-content elementor-clearfix\" data-tab=\"4\" role=\"tabpanel\" aria-labelledby=\"elementor-tab-title-1274\" tabindex=\"0\" hidden=\"hidden\"><p>The library provides access to licensed electronic resources for learning, teaching and research to bona fide staff, students and other authorized users of the University of Zimbabwe Library. Users are expected to use these resources within the limits of the Zimbabwe Copyright and Neighbouring Rights Act. In addition, users should agree to comply with all applicable third party provider terms.\u00a0 Those terms may be supplied to users while using the resources or directly by the third party provider. In general, authorized users may access such resources for non-commercial, educational, scholarly and research purposes.
